Course Objective:

This is a comprehensive one-year course designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles of Chemistry. It covers matter, reactions, energetics, the Periodic Table, materials, and the Earth. The course will prepare students for further study in IGCSE Chemistry by developing key skills in analysis, problem-solving, and scientific understanding. The course will:

Focus on fundamental Chemistry concepts as outlined in the National Curriculum.
Provide a solid foundation in the study of Chemistry.
Prepare students for future study in IGCSE Chemistry.
Course Content:

The Particulate Nature of Matter:

Properties of states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) and gas pressure
Changes of state and particle model
Atom, Electrons, and Compounds:

Simple atomic model (Dalton)
Differences between atoms, elements, and compounds
Chemical symbols and formulae
Conservation of mass and chemical reactions
Pure and Impure Substances:

Concept of pure substances
Mixtures, dissolving, diffusion
Separation techniques: filtration, evaporation, distillation, chromatography
Chemical Reactions:

Acids and alkalis, neutralisation reactions
pH scale and indicators
Reactions with metals and alkalis
Energetics:

Energy changes during changes of state
Exothermic and endothermic reactions
The Periodic Table:

Physical and chemical properties of elements
Mendeleev’s Periodic Table principles
Patterns in reactions, properties of metals and non-metals
Materials:

Reactivity series of metals and carbon
Properties of ceramics, polymers, composites
Earth and Atmosphere:

Composition and structure of the Earth
Rock cycle and formation of rocks
Recycling efficacy, carbon cycle
Atmospheric composition and impact of human activity
Course Material:

Cambridge Lower Secondary Complete Chemistry, Second Edition by Philippa Gardom Hulme, Anna Harris, and Onn May Ling
