This year, our English Project is based on creating our own magazine. By immersing ourselves in this project, the children will develop their listen, reading, writing and analytical skills. We will aim to publish multiple editions throughout the year.

We will explore both fiction and non-fiction texts.
• Fiction texts will include short stories, poems and graphic novels.
• Non-fiction and transactional texts will include magazine articles, diaries, autobiographical pieces, travel writing, letters and emails.

Children will be invited to join the class book club and magazine borrowing library to encourage reading widely, increasing the variety of reading undertaken. For those who want to participate, home reading will be given weekly with a short discussion at the beginning or end of the class. Children usually enjoy reading together in this way.

We will also read and analyse a variety of texts in class and identify their key features, considering:
• Who is the intended audience?
• What is the purpose of the text?
• What conventions can we recognise in the form of writing?
• What inferred meaning can be found?

Writing will be an integral part of the learning process as the students create their own articles, letters to the editor, stories, poems and fact files to be included in the magazine.
Students will learn to write:
• to entertain; to inform; to persuade
• using the proper conventions of the form of writing.
• Using effective structure, paragraphs and punctuation.

Parental involvement is encouraged to nurture an enthusiasm for language and parents are welcome to scribe for reluctant writers. The desire to record their own thoughts will follow.

A well-equipped pencil case is always handy to have with you.
