The classes are in person

This course is aimed at those in KS2 and lower KS3 who are looking for a relaxed, fun, creative, and collaborative way to explore the maths curriculum. Knowledge of numbers up to 100 and the ability to give it a go are the only course requirements!

Course Objectives:
The aim is to explore a range of mathematical subjects that will feed into the national curriculum but not always remain tied to it.

Teaching and Learning:
Lessons will involve group work, playing games, discussion, and various investigative tasks aimed at engaging and developing an understanding of different mathematical concepts.
The challenges are designed to be accessible to a range of students and abilities, with extensions to stretch the more able students.
Students will be up and moving around, exploring, and working with peers.
Throughout the lessons, there will be opportunities to reflect and provide feedback on that lesson’s learning to ensure that all students are developing sound mathematical knowledge.
After each investigation, time will be scheduled to consolidate and practice skills that have emerged from the investigations, with recommendations to extend this learning further at home.

Example Topics:
Tessellation:
Why do some shapes tessellate and others don’t? Examining artworks that use tessellation and relating these to the four mathematical transformations. Creating a piece of work using some or all of what we have investigated, inspired by the students’ own interests.
The Golden Ratio and Fibonacci in Nature:
Which rectangles are we drawn to and why? Can you use this to draw the perfect spiral? Where can we find this in nature? What other sequences can we find in nature or real life?

Resources:
Resources will be either made by the tutor or taken from CAME Mathematics, Bowland Mathematics, CIMT/MEP, NRich, and mostly Corbett Maths Primary for consolidation. There will be recommendations for further revision and exploration.

Required Materials:
It will be hugely beneficial for students to bring the following to each lesson:
2 Pencils
Rubber
Protractor
Ruler with cm and mm
A pair of compasses (for drawing circles)
Calculator (scientific calculator not required)
The tutor will provide all printouts and an exercise book. Most importantly, we aim to have fun!
